Subject: Institutional Quotas for 2024-2025 to 2026-2027 Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarships (Vanier CGS) Competitions

The purpose of this note is to inform institutions of the Vanier CGS institutional quotas established for the next three years and to provide an update on the new yearly distribution plan.

In December 2023, the Vanier CGS institutional quotas for the next three competition years (2024-2025 to 2026-2027) were approved and can be found in the attached PDF document (Appendix B). It should be noted however, that the Vanier-Banting Secretariat reserves the right to adjust program policies and procedures, and that as such it is possible that the quotas presented herein may not necessarily remain applicable for the entire duration of the 2024-25 to 2026-27 period.

The methodology used to determine the Vanier CGS quotas for 2024-25 to 2026-27 (outlined in Appendix A below) is similar to the approach used for the 2021-22 to 2023-24 quotas, with one notable difference: As a newly implemented EDI measure for the 2024-25 to 2026-27 period, all eligible institutions have been granted a minimum quota of 3 nominations in total for the period. This has been introduced in response to feedback from research administrators to ensure that all eligible small institutions have at least one quota per year.

The quota distributions have been made as follows:

  1. All Canadian institutions are provided a yearly quota within the existing three-year quota allotment.
  2. Any unused annual quotas will not be carried forward in future years.
  3. Floating quotas can be used in any of the three years, but will not be carried forward beyond 2026-2027.

Additional quotas for applicants who self-identify as Indigenous

Since the 2021-22 competition, the VBS has allowed additional quotas for applicants who self-identify as Indigenous in the Vanier CGS program to incentivize their participation in the Vanier CGS program. In 2021-22 and 2022-23, 20 and 26 requests were received, respectively. The VBS will continue to allow additional quotas for Indigenous applicants for future competitions.
